Villa went through to the next round of the Carabao Cup after a 2-1 victory against a competitive Colchester side.

Villa, as expected, started off the brighter side, and they were rewarded for their early pressure when Colchester’s keeper fumbled the ball in the 7th minute when under pressure from Green, allowing Hogan to slide the ball into an empty net.

Villa’s lead was nearly snuffed out a mere minute later, when Samba gave away a penalty for a poorly timed lunge. Thankfully for Samba, Steer was on hand to provide a decent save.

Villa doubled their lead in the 20th minute when Colchester defender Kent could only divert Adomah’s pinpoint cross into the back of his own net. Colchester had their moments to get back into the game, and were denied again by Steer in the 37th minute. However, they weren’t to be denied for much longer, and Kent steered one into the net in the 39th minute.

The first 20 minutes of the second half was a pretty even affair with both teams seeing plenty of the ball but not doing a lot with it. Villa came close to doubling their lead in the 63rd minute when Adomah’s fierce shot was well saved by Walker. However, as the pitch got soggier from the all the rain, the quality started to seep from the game, and Villa hung on for a 2-1 win.
