The left-back was widely reported to be leaving the club this summer and return to the French league, where he was hugely impressive.
The player has been officially announced and is expected to join up with the Marseille squad immediately.
There were talks that the move may only be a loan one but Marseille pushed for a permanent move and got their wish as Aston Villa agreed to sell the player.
The 23-year-old was set to join Spanish La Liga side, Sevilla, earlier in the summer when both clubs agreed on a £8 million fee only for the player to fail his medical and therefore the move collapsed.
Amavi joined Aston Villa in the summer of 2015 for £9 million from Ligue 1 side Nice but his first season was cut short with a serious injury.
