Steve Bruce was denied an early Christmas present as he saw his side blow a two-goal lead at home to Sheffield United.
A penalty from Albert Adomah and a first Villa Goal for Mile Jedinak saw the Villains take an early lead.
Former Birmingham City striker Clayton Donaldson wrapped up an eventful first 15 minutes by pulling a goal back for the visitors.
It was Donaldson who would draw United level and the two teams shared the points.
Here is how we rated the Villa players after the full-time whistle.
Sam Johnstone - 6
Was unlucky to be beat twice by Donaldson, not much he could have done about the goals.
Ahmed Elmohamady - 5
His final ball was lacking and that hindered Villa when they were going forward.
James Chester - 6
Looked out of place a little bit but managed the game better as the match went on.
Mile Jedinak - 5
A mixed game for the Australian. He scored his first goal for the club but defensive errors saw United come back into the game.
Neil Taylor - 6
Helped Villa try to get on the front foot going forward and was stable enough at the back bar the odd moment.
Robert Snodgrass - 7
A brilliant free-kick to set up Jedinak was the highlight of a strong performance from the winger.
Glenn Whelan - 5
The former Stoke man was caught out in possession on a number of occasions.
Conor Hourihane - 6
A relatively strong performance from Hourihane in midfield. He kept things simple in possession and impressed in spells.
Albert Adomah - 8
Villa’s Man of the Match. He got the home side off to the perfect start from the spot.
Jack Grealish - 8
Grealish stepped up when it mattered and was at the heart of everything Villa did well.
Keinan Davis - 7
Another strong performance from the youngster who continues to impress at Villa.
Subs:
Ritchie De Laet – 6
Tried to get forward when possible but lacked any final product.
Gabby Agbonlahor – 5
Not much fell for Agbonlahor late in the game.
Scott Hogan – 5
Another subsitute who could not get into the game much. Looks like he is playing with little to no confidence.
