Aston Villa’s automatic promotion hopes were dealt a severe blow as they were defeated by QPR 3-1 at Villa Park on Tuesday evening.

After the 4-1 defeat of Wolves at the weekend, many expected this to be a routine win for Steve Bruce’s men, but they inexplicably decided not to show up and were soundly beaten.

To make matters worse for them, both Wolves and Cardiff picked up comfortable wins – leaving Villa 10 points behind the league leaders and 7 points behind Cardiff in second.

Next up for Villa is an away game against Bolton on Saturday afternoon and if they fail to pick up all three points at the Macron Stadium, then they (as well as all Villa fans) will almost certainly have to kiss goodbye to automatic promotion and start preparing themselves for the pressures of the play-offs.
