# Schmeichel: Villa should not have sacked Sherwood

Former Villa goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel believes that the Villa board made a mistake in getting rid of Tim Sherwood in October, after his successor Remi Garde was sacked on Tuesday after failing to drag Villa out of the relegation battle.

Sherwood, who was appointed last February as Villa manager, was removed from his position in October after Villa had dropped to the bottom of the Premier League table having not won in the league since the opening day of the season.

Since Sherwood was sacked, Villa have only won two league games, which meant that his successor Remi Garde was also removed from his position with Villa all but guaranteed to playing in the Championship next season.

Schmeichel, who spent a solitary campaign at Villa Park (2001/02), was critical of the decision to remove Sherwood from his post, as well as being surprised at the fact that Garde wasn’t given the opportunity to turn things around.

Speaking to [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11677/10222868/aston-villa-made-a-mistake-by-sacking-tim-sherwood-says-peter-schmeichel), Schmeichel said:

> I’m shocked that you give a manager a job in a very difficult situation, that he hasn’t put the club in, and then you give him that little time to solve it?
>
> They should have done their due diligence and got it right back then.
>
> Tim Sherwood was well capable of getting Aston Villa out of trouble, but they didn’t think that and now they’ve gone down the route of sacking yet another manager and history proves that doesn’t help.
>
> So, it’s a shock and then again no, because that’s the way football has been going for quite a while.

Villa face Chelsea at Villa Park on Saturday, in the first game of the post-Remi Garde era.
