# Match Report: Aston Villa 1-2 Bournemouth

Villa’s 23rd loss of the season was not enough to confirm relegation to the Championship, due to Crystal Palace’s victory over Norwich.

Eric Black opted for a more cautious line-up against the Cherries, with Bacuna and Richardson chosen ahead of Adama and Grealish, whilst Scott Sinclair made a rare start up front. Jordan Lyden was also handed his first start, having made a number of substitute appearances under Remi Garde.

Villa failed to get going during the first half, with Gana’s attempt which went high and wide Villa’s only real sight of goal. Eventually, the visitors took the lead just before half-time, when Steve Cook flicked the ball past Guzan and meant that Bournemouth went into half time 1-0 up.

Despite the introduction of Rudy Gestede at half time, Villa still failed to pose any sort of attacking threat and it was Bournemouth who extended their lead in the 74th minute. It was Joshua King who made the most of a mistake from Ciaran Clark to loft the ball over Brad Guzan and put Bournemouth 2-0 up.

However, Villa at least did show some fight in the closing stages, when Jordan Ayew fired past Artur Boruc, but in truth it was too little too late.

Throughout the game, the Villa fans inside a sparsely populated Villa Park made their voices heard and deserve credit for sticking with the team.

The result also meant that it was Villa’s eight consecutive loss, breaking the record set by Tim Sherwood and Kevin MacDonald earlier this season.
