Match Report | Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa

Villa’s 28-year stay in the top flight is over, as Villa fell to a 1-0 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

In truth, no-one expected Villa to pull off the greatest comeback ever and win their remaining five games, but Eric Black’s team selection was disappointing, with the only change from the defeat to Bournemouth seeing Hutton replace the unfortunate Jordan Lyden. It was especially disappointing considering Adama and Grealish were both available and fit to start.

The first half saw Manchester United dominate possession, with Villa failing to get forward and losing the ball with ease. Eventually, United went into the lead, when Antonio Valencia’s cross found Marcus Rashford who turned the ball past Guzan, who should have done much better.

With Villa’s future in the Premier League coming to an end, one might have expected Villa to attack United in the second half but alas Villa continued to sit back and allowed United to dominate possession.

The introduction of Rudy Gestede in the 82nd minute gave Villa another option, with Gestede himself firing against the post minutes after his introduction.

However, it was too little too late for Villa and consequently meant that Villa will be playing in the second tier of English football next season for the first time since the 1987/88 season.
