# Aston Villa asked Sir Alex Ferguson over new boss

Aston Villa  sought the advice of Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson when looking to appoint the new manager at Villa Park.

The [Sunday People](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/aston-villa-asked-alex-fergusons-8225643?) report that Keith Wyness spoke to the former Manchester United boss about who would be suited to be the next manager at Villa Park with Ferguson recommending David Moyes.

Chinese businessman Dr Tony Xia is believed to have chosen Roberto Di Matteo as his new manager because it would look good in China as well as for his managerial ability.

The incoming chief executive Keith Wyness revealed that Xia had spoken to Ferguson.

> We were undertaking our research and he recommended a few managers to us. Sadly for Sir Alex, his first choice was discounted. Roberto’s appointment was very much the chairman’s decision.

Roberto Di Matteo was always a favourite with the bookies for the job, but at one stage David Moyes was believed to have been in talks with Villa only for the Scot to pull out of the running.

Only time will tell if Xia was right to ignore the view of Alex Ferguson and go with Di Matteo who is reportedly set to receive a large war chest to get the Midlands side back to the Premier League.
