A report in the Birmingham Mail has been looking into some statistics surrounding Aston Villa’s time on the telly, and it does not make for pretty reading.
As we know, Steve Bruce suffered his first loss as Villa boss when his side went down 2-0 to Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday evening.
This match was their ninth televised game on Sky Sports this season, and it was a loss that continued their horrid form in front of the cameras. So far, out of their nine televised matches, Villa have drawn six and lost three of them. In fact, due to their horrendous season last year, Villa’s last league win on TV was when they beat Leicester on the 7th December 2014 – Yes, their last televised league win was nearly 2 years ago.
With three more televised league games this month alone (against Norwich, QPR and Leeds) Villa must put this hoodoo to bed.
Sky select their games based on the potential viewing audience and, therefore, given Villa’s huge fan base, any game involving Villa is an attractive proposition for Sky Sports. As a result, it is highly likely that Villa will feature heavily in Sky’s planning for the rest of the campaign. In fact, January’s match against Wolves and former manager Paul Lambert has already been selected, along with Brentford away.
Therefore, Villa must overcome this curse of the TV or it could soon derail what has been a very positive two months for the club.
