# Villa face competition in chase for new goalkeeper

Three teams are looking to hijack Aston Villa’s attempt to take goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on loan from Manchester United, according to a report in the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-4024228/Transfer-news-LIVE-Arsenal-Chelsea-Liverpool-FC-Manchester-United-City-updates-ahead-January-window.html).

The 23-year-old looked set to seal a loan move to[Villa](https://readastonvilla.com/) but with no deal yet finalised, Norwich City, Wigan Athletic and Bristol City have apparently contacted the [Premier League](https://readpl.com/) side about his availability.

United want to send Johnstone out on loan to get game time as he’s currently behind both David de Gea and Sergio Romero in the pecking order, so they’ll likely want to send him somewhere where he will play games.

Whether he would get that chance at Villa is still up in the air and if one of Bristol City, Norwich or Wigan can offer him the chance to play every week, then United could choose to send him there instead.

Steve Bruce has made it clear he wants to bring a new ‘keeper in as his squad lacks depth in that area.
