This is how many points Villa have lost due to keeper errors

The Birmingham Mail have revealed that Aston Villa’s dodgy goalkeepers have cost them 11 crucial points over the season.

Goalkeeping errors have been the bane of Villa’s season. From Gollini’s early-season howlers (that saw him loaned out to Serie A side Atalanta) to Sam Johnstone’s recent gaffs, Villa have thrown away far too many points this season and they’re now starting to take effect. Mark Bunn has been their most consistent performer, but even he has had his shaky moments.

Villa have kept just 6 clean sheets all season and have only managed a shut-out in one of their last 16 matches. The fact they they are the 3rd lowest scorers in the league doesn’t help their cause, but there is no denying the fact that regular goalkeeping errors have been the most damaging to their play-off ambitions.

Below is a rundown of the goalkeeping errors that have plagued Villa this season:

Sheffield Wednesday 1 Villa 0

Gollini made his debut for Villa in this match, and he marked it with a dreadful clearance to set up a late winner for Fernando Forestieri.

Villa 1 Huddersfield 1

Just two games later and Gollini was throwing away more valuable points. This time his clearance was charged down by Hefele and the ball cannoned off him and into the empty net.

Barnsley 1 Villa 1

Gollini came off his line to claim a cross, but misjudged it. This allowed Sam Winnall to pop up with a late equalizer.

Leeds 2 Villa 0

This game was evenly poised until Gollini came to claim a cross but was easily beaten to it by Kemar Roofe. Leeds took the lead and never looked back. Bruce’s patience with the young Italian was starting to run thin and the search for his replacement began.

Cardiff 1 Villa 0

Mark Bunn’s weak save from a flicked-on Bennett corner cost Villa once again as it allowed Joe Ralls to fire home. Bunn had a good game and was not solely to blame for the defeat. However, he will know that he should have done better.

Wolves 1 Villa 0

Sam Johnstone arrived on loan from Manchester United in January, but he has done little to improve Villa’s keeping woes.In this game Johnstone parried a weak cross straight into the path on the onrushing Joe Mason – who made no mistake with the finish.

Nottingham Forest 2 Villa 1

Villa deserved so much more from this game, but did not get it thanks to yet another goalkeeping error by Johnstone. With just minutes before half time, and Villa 1 up, Johnstone fumbled a long range effort and gifted Nottingham Forest a tap in. To add to this, the fans might argue that he should have kept out Forest’s winning goal in the 93rd minute as well.
