Villa player ratings: Newcastle (A)

Aston Villa succumbed to their 5th straight defeat against Newcastle at St. James’ Park on Monday evening. This loss now means that Villa have lost 8 out of 9 games this year.

Villa had Newcastle rattled for the first 40 minutes of the first half, and the Geordie faithful were clearly getting agitated. Johnstone’s first piece of action, as it has been so much of late, involved him picking the ball out his net on the 42nd minute. Newcastle took a short corner that caught Villa napping, they swung the ball into the box and Villa failed to clear their lines. After an age of ping-pong, the ball, as so usually happens when your luck is down, fell to Gouffran to tap in from a couple of yards.

The second half started off with Newcastle applying the pressure, but not creating much. However, in the 59th minute Newcastle earned another corner, and once again Villa defender it like Sunday league players. The ball was swung into the box, Lascelles poked it towards goal and Lansbury, the player on the post, could only slice the ball and off the post for an own goal.

For the rest of the game, Newcastle toyed with Villa and if it weren’t for a few fine saves from Johnstone, the defeat could have been even heavier. Villa’s night got a lot worse when Hogan landed awkwardly on his ankle – it didn’t look good in slow motion and it looks like he could be out for a long period of time.

Anyway, here’s our player ratings for tonight’s 2-0 defeat.
