A depleted Aston Villa side made it 4 wins in 5 games thanks to a 2-0 victory over promotion-chasing side Sheffield Wednesday.
As we all know, Villa had a number of key players out inured before the match, but things got worse when Lansbury had to withdraw from the team during the warm up. Then, to compound matters, Baker limped off injured in the 25th minute.
Wednesday started off brightly and looked the more likely team to score, with Sam Winnall going close on two occasions – first firing wide from 25 yards before having another effort saved by Johnstone. Sasso then had a goal ruled out for offside, before Kodjia scored his 14th goal of the season with a fine header.
Things got worse for Wednesday when Sasso was sent off in the 48th minute for a two-footed lunge on Hourihane. Carvalhal, the Owls’ manager, for some strange reason, wasn’t happy with the decision and after a heated protest, he was sent to the stands by Lee Probert.
Wednesday, to be fair, were unlucky not to get a penalty when Jack Hunt was brought down in the box by Amavi. However, Villa fans might argue they are due a bit of luck.
The game was put to bed in the 79th minute when Kodjia latched onto a fine through ball from Adomah, rounded Westwood and tapped home into an empty net. It wasn’t the best of performances from Villa, but Bruce will be very pleased by how his players stood up and were counted in the face of adversity.
