Villa cemented their place in the play-off positions with a comfortable 2-0 win against Preston at Deepdale on Wednesday evening.

The away side started the game very much on the front foot, and they were rewarded for their early domination in the 12th minute when James Chester headed in Robert Snodgrass’ corner for his first goal of the season.

This goal kicked Preston into life and they started seeing more of the ball, but they struggled to create any meaningful chance with the possession they were having.

Villa doubled their lead in the 33rd minute when a sloppy pass by Preston captain Ben Pearson was pounced on by Josh Onomah, who surged to the edge of the Preston box before squaring it for Snodgrass to sweep home.

Nothing much of note happened in the remainder of the half, and Villa went in at the break two goals to the good.

Villa came out in the second half content to sit back and keep their 2 goal lead intact, and they carried out their aim admirably. Preston could find no way through their stoic defence, and it was Villa who should have added to their tally late on when Adomah blazed over when one-on-one.
