Aston Villa got another three points on the board with a less than impressive 2-1 victory over Sunderland at Villa Park on Tuesday evening.

Sunderland had the majority of the possession in the opening stages, but it was Villa who struck first when Albert Adomah turned in Robert Snodgrass’ cross in the ninth minute for his ninth goal of the season.

The home crowd would have expected Villa to push on from there, but, if truth be told, the midfield were sloppy on the ball and kept giving it away with poor passes. Sunderland dominated possession in the first-half, but they never troubled Sam Johnstone in the Villa goal.

Villa started the second-half a lot better than they ended the first, and they were rewarded for their improvement when an Onomah shot in the 49th minute took a big deflection and looped into the net.

Villa tried to put the game to bed, but it was Sunderland who ensured a nervous remaining eighteen minutes when Lewis Grabban poked home from two yards.  However, despite some late Sunderland pressure, Villa managed to hold out for the victory.
