Aston Villa’s seven match winning streak came to an abrupt halt as they were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon.
This magnificent run of wins was always going to come to an end at some point, but Bruce and his players will be disappointed that they didn’t make Fulham work harder for the three points.
Villa’s poor day at the office was summed up in the 71st minute when Johnstone, with Villa already one down, took a free-kick to the right of his box, picked out Ayité in the midfield and then watched in horror as the Togolese international put the ball into the empty net. It is a moment that Johnstone will not be in a hurry to see again.
This defeat, coupled with Cardiff’s 1-0 win over Middlesbrough, pushed Villa out of the second automatic promotion spot. However, they have a chance to make amends on Tuesday night when they take on Preston at Villa Park. Hopefully Grealish and Adomah will be fit by then, as they were sorely missed this afternoon.
