Aston Villa were held to a 1-1 draw by Preston at Villa Park on Tuesday evening.

The home side started the match brightly and looked the more likely to take the lead, but they found Rudd in no mood to be beaten. Preston eventually grew into the game and were putting the Villa defence under a lot of pressure.

This pressure eventually paid off when Preston broke from their own half, earned a corner and from the resulting corner, after Johnstone failed to punch clear, Barkhuizen’s overhead kick found the back of the net.

Robinson had a great chance ten minutes into the second half to put the game to bed, but Johnstone pulled out a fine save. Ten minutes later, Villa were awarded a penalty when Keinan Davis was fouled in the box, and Lewis Grabban grabbed his first goal for the club.

Both sides had a chance to nick all three points but, in the end, they had to settle for a share of the spoils. This point moves Villa to within one point of automatic promotion, but Cardiff have a game in hand against Ipswich tomorrow evening.
