Aston Villa’s bid for automatic promotion took a severe blow on Tuesday evening when they were overturned 3-1 at Villa Park by QPR.
This poor showing, coupled with Cardiff City’s comfortable victory over Brentford, has left Villa 7 points adrift of an automatic promotion spot, with just 27 points left to play for.
Therefore, in order for Villa to pip Cardiff to the post come the beginning of May, they are going to have to win the majority of their remaining 9 games and hope that their rivals slip up three or four times. A big ask.
Next up for Villa is an away match against Bolton on Saturday evening. If they fail to pick up all three points against a relegated-threatened Bolton side and go ten points adrift of Cardiff, then they can almost certainly start preparing for the stress of the play-offs.
