Another long and arduous Championship season is coming to a close, and Villa’s last league match is an away trip to The Den to face Millwall.
With this game being a dead rubber and the little issue of a play-off semi-final next weekend (probably against Middlesbrough), we expect Steve Bruce to rest a number of key individuals to ensure that they don’t pick up any injuries that would rule them out of the all important play-offs.
Millwall have had a fantastic first season back in the Championship, but, unless there’s a drastic turn around in goal difference, it looks like that they are going to fall agonizingly short of a play-off berth.
Nevertheless, they will want to end the season on a high, so they will try their best to overturn a strong, albeit it, most like second-string, Villa side.
Here’s our predicted Villa XI for the trip to Millwall:
GK: Mark Bunn
The last thing Villa want or need is for Johnstone to get injured, so we think Bruce might give Bunn a game on Sunday.
RB: James Bree
Elmohamady is expected to start the first leg of the play-off final next weekend, so we reckon Bruce will give Bree a rare chance to impress.
CB: Mile Jedinak
Chester has played every single minute of the season so far, but we don’t think Bruce will risk him in a dead rubber.
CB: Christopher Samba
Terry will be vital for Villa’s play-off hopes, so we reckon Samba will get a rare start against Millwall.
LB: Alan Hutton
With Taylor out injured, Hutton should be given another chance to shine on Sunday.
RM: Robert Snodgrass
Snodgrass hasn’t been at his best lately, so Bruce will be hoping he gets his mojo back ahead of next week’s big game.
CM: Glenn Whelan
If Jedinak plays as a make-shift CB, then we expect to see Whelan starting.
CM: Henri Lansbury
Due to the amount of players that we expect to be rested, we’re certain that Lansbury will be given his second start of the season.
CM: Josh Onomah
Bjarnason is injured and Grealish won’t be risked in a meaningless match, so we think Onomah will be given another chance to shine.
LM: Albert Adomah
Adomah is another one who has been off the pace recently, so Bruce will be hoping he finds his form again in this final match of the season.
ST: Jonathan Kodjia
Kodjia needs to improve his fitness, so he should be given the full 90 minutes against Millwall.
