# Aston Villa’s Birkir Bjarnason suffers injury blow on international duty

Aston Villa and Icelandic midfielder Birkir Bjarnason has reportedly suffered an injury knock while away on international duty.

According to [reports emerging from his home country, as cited on the Birmingham Mail](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/aston-villa-injuries-birkir-bjarnason-14251861), the player was said to be complaining about a potential back injury after Iceland’s most recent defeat.

The severity of the injury is yet to be determined, but the knock was described as ‘sore’ which may hint at only a minor issue for Bjarnason.

Bjarnason started for Iceland during their 6-0 defeat to Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League on Saturday but was forced off just after the hour mark.

The news comes as a blow to both Steve Bruce and Bjarnason, with the latter starting the new campaign well for Villa.

Bjarnason has featured in four of Villa’s six Championship fixtures, with three of those being starts and has managed to score one goal in those games.
