According to [Het Niewsblad](https://www.nieuwsblad.be/cnt/dmf20181219_04046859), the player is closing in on a move to the Championship side after missing out on a deal back in 2016.

Villa have been linked with a move for the Croatian goalkeeper for some time, but work permit issues prevent a deal earlier in his career.

Dean Smith’s side are now ready to go back in for the player, in what is a deal that looks to be gathering pace very quickly.

[Reports emerged on Wednesday that suggested](https://readastonvilla.com/2018/12/19/villa-chasing-lovre-kalinic-again/) Smith could launch a move to sign the player in January and it now seems like a deal is close.

After establishing himself as a Croatian international at the World Cup in Russia over the summer, the player is not expected to face any work permit issues this time around.
