If Aston Villa fans thought that they would never witness their team put in another performance as bad as the one against Swansea last weekend, they were sorely and sadly mistaken.
Dean Smith made a number of changes to the team that was dismantled 3-0 by the Swans in the FA Cup, but it made not a lot of difference as they still put in another shocking Sunday League display and were easily beaten 3-0 by Wigan.
What makes this defeat even more embarrassing is the fact that Wigan are currently in a relegation battle and hadn’t won a match since the end of November. However, during the game, you would have been forgiven for thinking that it was Wigan with their eye on a play-off spot and Villa who are looking over their shoulders.
Around 4,500 Villa fans travelled up to Wigan to watch that complete and utter dross, and every single one of them should be given their money back.
Here are our Villa player ratings for tonight’s game against Wigan:
GK: Lovre Kalinic -6
Made a couple of great saves, but he was let down by his defenders. Didn’t deserve to concede three goals today.
RB: James Bree - 1
Bree had been playing pretty well lately, but today he was just as bad as the majority of his team.
CB: James Chester - 1
He seemed to forget that to get somewhere in football you need to pass the ball to your own team members. I lost count of the amount of times he needlessly gave away possession.
CB: Tommy Elphick - 1
Giving the ball away must be contagious as he seemed to be competing with Chester to see who could pass to the opposition the most.
LB: Neil Taylor - 0
If you were to look up the adjectives “pathetic,” “diabolical” or “shocking” in the English dictionary, there’s a very good chance that you will find a picture of Neil Taylor. We all know he is rubbish, but he took it to a whole new extreme today, which was epitomised when he was sent for a hotdog in the lead up to Wigan’s opener.
RM: Anwar El Ghazi -1
El-Ghazi likes to show of his skills, but when you can’t pass to a teammate or swing in a decent cross after you have finished showboating, then what’s the point? He was terrible this afternoon.
CM: Birkir Bjarnason - 3
Was pretty poor as well for the most part, but at least it looked like he was making an effort and actually cared.
CM: Conor Hourihane - 1
Another totally inept performance from Hourihane. His set-pieces were extremely poor and his passing wasn’t much better.
CM: John McGinn - 5
McGinn, just like he was against Swansea last weekend, was the best of a bad bunch. He made a number of lung-bursting runs, tracked back when needed, and left everything he had out on the field. Shame his teammates didn’t do the same.
LM: Yannick Bolasie - 1
Bolasie, just like El Ghazi, seems to be more concerned about showing off his skills than getting the basics right. He totally disappeared in the second-half.
ST: Tammy Abraham - 1
Didn’t get the service that he needed from the midfield, but when he had a great chance to open the scoring, he somehow missed the target. Barely touched the ball for the rest of the game.
SUB: Glenn Whelan - 1
Came on for the final thirty minutes and the only thing he did of note was give away a late penalty.
SUB: Kourtney Hause - 1
Hause also came on for the final thirty and he had an absolute mare. He made three errors within the first three minutes of being on the field and for the rest of the game he showcased the technical ability of a giraffe.
SUB: Albert Adomah - 1
Adomah came on for El Ghazi and carried on doing what he has been doing for most the season – absolutely nothing.
