Aston Villa made it sevens win in a row thanks to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Rotherham United at the New York Stadium.
The Millers started the match on the front foot and tested Jed Steer in the Villa goal with a couple of early shots that he was equal to.
The away side grew into the game and should have taken the lead in the 12th minute when Jack Grealish was hauled down in the penalty box, but Tammy Abraham was too nonchalant with his effort from the spot and saw his effort saved by Marek Rodak.
From then on, it was all Rotherham and things got worse for Dean Smith’s men when Tyrone Mings picked up his second booking of the game in the 34th minute when he was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.
Will Vaulks stepped up and slammed the ball into the back of the net to give the home side a deserved lead which they took into the break.
A different Villa side came out after the break and they were back on level terms in the 48th minute when Villa were awarded another penalty when Semi Ajayi handled in the box.
Jonathan Kodjia, who had just come on at half-time, stepped up to take this one and he rifled it past Rodak to show Abraham how it is done.
Things got even better just three minutes later when a fleeting move was started and finished by Villa captain Jack Grealish.
Villa pushed for a third and decisive goal, while Rotherham tried their hardest to get a valuable point. However, there were no more goals and Villa now find themselves five points above Middlesbrough in 7th.
Here are our Villa player ratings for tonight’s match:
GK: Jed Steer - 7.5
Made a couple of decent saves early on and made a vital save just before half-time to ensure it was only 1-0 at the break. Didn’t have an awful lot to do in the second-half.
RB: Ahmed Elmohamady - 7.5
His cross into the box early on in the second-half led to the penalty and he put the ball on a plate to Grealish just minutes later. He defended well throughout the game as well.
CB: Tyrone Mings - 2
Was booked needlessly early on in the game and that came back to haunt him when he handled the ball in the box twenty minutes later and was subsequently sent for an early shower.
CB: Axel Tuanzebe - 7.5
Has just returned from a long spell on the sidelines, but you wouldn’t think it with the performance he put in again tonight. He was solid in defense, winning almost everything that came his way.
LB: Neil Taylor - 6.5
Struggled at times to contain Taylor, but he stuck at it and did a decent job defensively. Has improved a lot lately.
RM: Albert Adomah - 6
Was causing Rotherham a number of issues down the right flank, but his game came to a premature end when Mings got himself sent off in the 34th minute.
CM: Conor Hourihane - 6.5
Played in the defensive midfield role instead of Glenn Whelan and did a solid job. Should have probably scored late on as well.
CM: John McGinn - 8
McGinn is somebody that everyone would love to have on their team. Whenever Villa lost the ball, he was there first to win it back again. He did the work of two players to help compensate for Mings’ red card.
CM: Jack Grealish - 7.5
Won a penalty and a number of fouls in dangerous positions in the first-half and started and finished the goal that turned out to be the winner.
LM: Anwar El Ghazi - 3
Was basically a spectator in the first-half and was subbed off a half-time for Jonathan Kodjia. We don’t know whether he had a knock or whether it was a tactical change.
ST: Tammy Abraham - 3
Missed a penalty in the 12th minute and then struggled to make much of an impact for the rest of the game.
SUB: Mile Jedinak - 7
Has barely featured under Dean Smith, but he came on when Mings was sent off and did a job alongside Tuanzebe.
SUB: Jonathan Kodjia - 7.5
Came on at half-time for El Ghazi and emphatically scored a penalty three minutes later. He then proceeded to cause Rotherham’s defence a number of issues.
SUB: Glenn Whelan - N/A
Came on with just two minutes left to play, so cannot be given a rating.
