Aston Villa made it sevens win in a row thanks to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Rotherham United at the New York Stadium.

The Millers started the match on the front foot and tested Jed Steer in the Villa goal with a couple of early shots that he was equal to.

The away side grew into the game and should have taken the lead in the 12th minute when Jack Grealish was hauled down in the penalty box, but Tammy Abraham was too nonchalant with his effort from the spot and saw his effort saved by Marek Rodak.

From then on, it was all Rotherham and things got worse for Dean Smith’s men when Tyrone Mings picked up his second booking of the game in the 34th minute when he was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.

Will Vaulks stepped up and slammed the ball into the back of the net to give the home side a deserved lead which they took into the break.

A different Villa side came out after the break and they were back on level terms in the 48th minute when Villa were awarded another penalty when Semi Ajayi handled in the box.

Jonathan Kodjia, who had just come on at half-time, stepped up to take this one and he rifled it past Rodak to show Abraham how it is done.

Things got even better just three minutes later when a fleeting move was started and finished by Villa captain Jack Grealish.

Villa pushed for a third and decisive goal, while Rotherham tried their hardest to get a valuable point. However, there were no more goals and Villa now find themselves five points above Middlesbrough in 7th.
