Despite putting in a strong performance, Aston Villa came away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with nothing after Spurs ran out 3-1 winners to open the season.
John McGinn’s opening goal looked like it could be sending Villa into a shocking opening day win against the Champions League finalists, but a late Spurs fightback would break Villans’ hearts.
Villa defended well, but were eventually broken down when Frenchman Tanguy Ndombele opened the scoring for Spurs with a great finish.
Harry Kane would then win the game for Spurs, scoring with two great finishes to get Spurs’ season off to the best start.
Despite the defeat, Villa gave a very good account of themselves, showing that they won’t be taken lightly in this division.
Several players impressed in Villa’s return to the top flight, and put in some really good performances
However, how did we rate the individual performances of the Villa players?
Check them out below…
Tom Heaton - 8
Had a great game, despite conceding three.
Made some quality saves, and was unlucky to concede.
Ahmed El Mohamady - 6
Despite almost making a horrible error early on, the Egyptian had a very solid 90 minutes.
Tyrone Mings - 7
Looked very good and very comfortable at this level of football.
Jumped out of the way of the equaliser, so should really have done more in the situation.
Bjorn Engels - 7
Played well as well, and was very unlucky to be on the losing side.
Neil Taylor - 6
Another okay performance, but he may struggle to stay in the team with Matt Targett waiting in the wings.
Conor Hourihane - 6
Not up to his usual best, and looked a bit ineffective in comparison to some others.
Trezeguet - 7
A really impressive debut from the Egyptian.
However, he had some golden chances to score and didn’t ever really test the keeper.
John McGinn - 9
The Scot showed why Villa have handed him a new five-year deal. Fantastic goal and was superb throughout.
Jack Grealish - 6
Spurs tackled him a lot, but Grealish didn’t really look up to his best.
Anwar El Ghazi - 6
Not his best game, didn’t look like he coped with the physicality of the Premier League and went down way too easily.
Wesley - 5
Not his greatest performance, and another who seemingly went down too easily.
Jota – 5
Jonathan Kodjia – 3
Douglas Luiz – 5
