Aston Villa got their first three points of the season thanks to a 2-0 win over Everton at Villa Park.
The away side got off to the better start and were applying early pressure on Dean Smith’s men, but they weathered the storm and started to dominate the midfield.
Villa opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Jota played a lovely through ball to Wesley Moraes, who calmly slotted the ball past Jordan Pickford for what will hopefully be his first of many Premier League goals.
Everton had two glorious chances in the second half to equalise, but Moise Kean saw his shot hit the post and Theo Walcott somehow failed to hit the target from about 7 yards out.
The home side sealed the win with virtually the last kick of the game when Anwar El Ghazi, who came on as a late substitute, collected a John McGinn pass and slid the ball under Pickford from 6 yards out.
Here are our Villa player ratings for yesterday win over Everton:
GK: Tom Heaton - 7.5
Made a couple of fine saves to ensure that Villa picked up all three points.
RB: Frederic Guilbert - 7.5
Was extremely solid in defence and got forward at every opportunity he could. If he keeps playing like this it is hard to see how Elmohaady gets a game.
CB: Tyrone Mings - 7.5
Put in another very solid performance and was a major reason why Villa kept a clean sheet.
CB: Bjorn Engels - 8.5
Made a vital block to ensure that Villa kept a clean sheet and put his body on the line time after time. He is forming a great relationship with Mings.
LB: Neil Taylor - 7.5
Kept Richarlison quiet and is doing everything that he can to make sure that he keeps his position in the starting XI.
RM: Jota - 8.5
Set up Villa’s first goal and was a constant threat for the time that he was on the field. After today’s performance, he can be certain that he will start again next weekend.
CM: Douglas Luiz - 7.5
Kept Sigurdsson quiet and broke up any Everton attack that threatened to upset Villa.
CM: John McGinn - 7
Provided the assist for Villa’s second goal and was the driving force once again in the Villa midfield.
CM: Jack Grealish - 7
Made a number of devastating runs and was much better than he has been in the opening two matches.
LM: Trezeguet - 7
Worked his socks off and kept Coleman busy all night. The Irishman won’t be looking forward to playing against him any time soon.
ST: Wesley Moraes - 8.5
Took his goal extremely well and was a constant nuisance for the Everton defence. Held the ball up well and won most of his duels in the air.
SUB: Anwar El Ghazi - 7
Only played twelve minutes but he still managed to scored the goal that ensured Villa walked away with all three points.
