# Matt Targett set to return for Villa after international break – Will he win the starting job?

Aston Villa’s Matt Targett will likely return to the first team after the international break, after picking up an injury in the Carabao Cup win over Crewe.

Targett has yet to appear for Aston Villa in the Premier League, with Neil Taylor keeping his role so far this season.

Targett did appear against Crewe but picked up an injury not long into his competitive debut for Villa.

However, his debut in the Premier League may be coming soon, with the [Birmingham Mail](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/villa-injury-latest-west-ham-14251861) reporting that he is hoping to ready for the clash with West Ham at Villa Park.

Dean Smith will have a tough decision to make over who should start at left-back, with Taylor and Targett continuing to fight over the starting job.

Targett has been unable to show his true potential for Villa since making the move from Southampton, and West Ham may finally be the place where he breaks into Dean Smith’s side.

Neil Taylor has been preferred over him, but many Villa fans have called for Targett to be put into the starting eleven.

The injury was a big blow to his early chances of winning the starting job, but he will surely be given a shot soon, even if it does come in the form of another cup performance.
