# Villa could miss out on deal to sign Coventry’s Sam McCallum to West Brom – Should Dean Smith push to sign him?

Aston Villa could reportedly miss out on signing Coventry City’s Sam McCallum, with West Bromwich Albion looking to beat Dean Smith to the defender.

Villa had been linked with the player, according to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-aston-villa-plot-transfer-missions-for-defender-wanted-by-leeds/), after the youngster broke into the Sky Blues’ first team.

However, West Brom are also looking to make a move for McCallum, with [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-west-brom-set-sights-on-blowing-aston-villa-away-to-sign-full-back/) also reporting that Albion are the latest team to be interested in a move for the defender.

Coventry are in top form this season, and the defender has appeared seven times as his side look to return to the Championship.

Villa have a lot of depth at left back, but they could always do with more young talent.

McCallum looks to be one for the future, but do Villa really need another defender?

Dean Smith spent a lot of money on Matt Targett over the summer, and the ex-Southampton man is yet to make an appearance for the club, so it might be worthwhile to leave this transfer be.

He is wanted by a number of clubs, so Villa could be in for a battle if they want him.
