Aston Villa picked up a much needed three points on the road thanks to a 5-1 win over Norwich City at Carrow Road.
The first half was played at a frenetic pace, with Villa taking the lead in the 14th minute when some dodgy defending meant that Wesley had ample time to chest the ball down in the box and stroke the ball past Michael McGovern in the Norwich goal.
Villa doubled their lead in the 30th minutes when Wesley stabbed the ball home from close range. He could have had his hat-trick before half-time, but McGovern pulled off a fine double save to deny him from the penalty spot.
The game was all but put to bed in the 49th minute when Jack Grealish found the bottom corner with a sweet strike. Two great strikes from Conor Hourihane in the 61st minute and Douglas Luiz in the 83rd rubbed salt into Norwich’s wounds.
Norwich got a consolation goal late on when Heaton lost Tyrone Mings’ back pass in the sun and Josip Drmic nipped in to slot the ball into an empty net.
Here are our Villa player ratings for today’s game:
GK: Tom Heaton - 7
Made a couple of fine saves, but, apart from those, he didn’t have much to do for most the game. Looked to have been blinded by the sun for Norwich’s consolation goal.
RB: Frederic Guilbert - 7.5
Showed his class once again and rarely put a foot wrong defensively. Also got forward as often as he could.
CB: Tyrone Mings - 7.5
Put his body on the line time and time again and did everything in his power to stop Norwich from scoring. A miss-hit back pass allowed Norwich to grab a consolation goal though.
CB: Bjorn Engels - 7.5
Was always alert and worked tirelessly alongside Mings to ensure that Villa’s goal was kept intact. He has been a great find for Villa and Smith will be hoping his injury isn’t a serious one.
LB: Matt Targett - 7.5
Didn’t put a foot wrong defensively and was a constant outlet down the left flank.
RM: Anwar El Ghazi - 7
Ran up and down the right flank for the hour that he was on the field and was constantly asking questions of the Norwich defence. He provided two assists as well.
CM: Marvelous Nakamba - 8 .5
He was always there to snuff out any danger and was calm and collected when on the ball. What a find he is turning out to be.
CM: Conor Hourihane - 7
Put in a number of dangerous set-pieces and scored a peach of a goal. Got an assist to his name as well and won Villa a penalty.
CM: John McGinn - 6.5
Was all over the park in the first-half, but clearly tired a bit in the second. However, we can’t blame him for this as he has been our best player in the last three matches.
LM: Jack Grealish - 8.5
Grealish has been getting some stick lately for his performances, but he was quality today. He ran the show in the midfield and caused Norwich loads of issues. Topped off a great performance with a fine finish.
ST: Wesley Moraes - 8.5
Wesley has been getting the most stick for his underwhelming performances, but he showed his capability today. He took his two goals very well and his hold up play was solid. He also tracked back to help his defenders out. Shame he missed his chance for a hat-trick.
SUB: Trezeguet - 5
Came on just after the hour mark for El Ghazi, but struggled to have an impact on the game.
SUB: Ezri Konsa - 6
Came on in the 75th minute for his Premier League debut and looks pretty assured. Made a couple of important blocks.
SUB: Douglas Luiz - 6
Only played for the final 12 minutes or so, but he did manage to score a cracking goal.
