Former striker and now pundit Noel Whelan believes that Aston Villa’s Matt Targett has made the perfect start to life at the club, despite having to wait for his chance.
Targett joined from Southampton over the summer, but had to sit behind Neil Taylor for several games, as Dean Smith attempted to find the best option at left-back.

However, Whelan believes that the defender has made the perfect start since being handed the chance.
Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said:
I was very impressed. He has waited a long time for his opportunity, he was hardly used at the start, and seized it in the perfect way. It’s been a great start for him.
It helps when you have good players in front of you, that makes a huge difference. But he was the box-to-box player on the left side they needed.
Targett has really good Premier League experience and was signed to strengthen a position that needed strengthening. He could be a really good signing.
Read Aston Villa’s verdict
Targett has been superb since usurping Neil Taylor in left back, and Whelan is completely correct here.
It’s fitting that when he had to come off before that Villa conceded immediately, which shows just how important Targett has been.
He looks to have won the spot on a full-time basis now, which will please many Villa fans.
