Ferguson values Villa target Morelos at £30m

Rangers legend Barry Ferguson believes Aston Villa target Alfredo Morelos will be worth £30m in the summer.

Morelos is being watched closely by Villa and fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace, who are both interested in strengthening their attacking departments.

The 23-year-old has nine goals in the Scottish Premiership and three goals in the UEFA Europa League group stages.

He’s undoubtedly the star man for Rangers and Ferguson feels the Premier League teams will need to pay a hefty sum to get him. As quoted on the Daily Record, he said:

If he keeps going the way he is then I believe Rangers will end up getting a ridiculous transfer fee for him. How ridiculous depends on which clubs come in for him. Right now, if I was inviting offers for him on the open market my starting price would be £20million.

People might question that valuation but they just need to take a look at the money changing hands in the English Championship. These guys are moving for between £15m and £20m and they’re playing in the second tier of the English game.

Morelos is scoring goals against Porto and Young Boys in European football. He’s an international and is still only 23 years old which means he won’t even be reaching his peak for another three or four years.

But what would be the point in taking that for him in January when you could be looking at £30m by the summer? Maybe even more.

Villa are in a difficult place at the moment financially and Morelos’ price could be a step too far for the club.

The club has been making losses in recent years and this means that they’ll have less freedom to spend big on new players.

However, they are now a Premier League club which means that they will be getting an increased amount of payments for TV coverage. One thing is certain, Rangers will drive a hard bargain for their star striker.

    matchday.
