Aston Villa announced on Wednesday that Trezeguet’s winner against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg was the club’s January Goal of the Month.
However, many fans didn’t agree with the choice.
Jack Grealish scored a brilliant equaliser against fellow relegation strugglers Brighton and Hove Albion and some Villa fans feel that his goal deserved to win the award.
Trezeguet’s strike sealed a place in the Carabao Cup final for Villa, whilst Grealish’s effort helped Villa earn a valuable point in the Premier League, so both were really important goals.
However, in terms of the quality of the goal, we also believe Grealish’s is superior. The way he brings the ball under control and shifts it away from the defender, before rifling into the net with his left foot is admirable.
The timing of the goal was also crucial. Grealish netted with only 15 minutes remaining in the match, so Villa were on their way to defeat before the Englishman’s individual brilliance turned a negative result into a positive one.
But the same can be said about Trezeguet’s late winner to send Villa to Wembley.
These fans took to Twitter to say that Grealish should have won the award.
