# Ahmed Elmohamady tipped to leave Aston Villa

Has the time come for [Ahmed Elmohamady](https://readastonvilla.com/2019/12/17/liverpool-fans-mock-ahmed-elmohamadys-celebration/) to depart Aston Villa?

The 33-year-old has been short of playing time this season and is out of contract in 2021, so it’s hard to see a new deal coming his way.

[Birmingham Live](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/aston-villa-january-transfer-window-19345470) writer Ashley Preece believes so, writing that he will “most likely move onto pastures new”, despite praising the defender as “dependable” and a “solid servant”.

The Egyptian international has made [118 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ahmed-elmohamady/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/66333) in all competitions since [joining](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ahmed-elmohamady/transfers/spieler/66333) from Hull City in 2017, but he is no longer commanding a starting place. Elmohamady has amassed only [35 minutes](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ahmed-elmohamady/leistungsdaten/spieler/66333) of Premier League football this season and finds himself behind summer signing Matty Cash in the [pecking order](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aston-villa/leistungsdaten/verein/405), so it would be no great surprise if he departs at the end of the campaign.

### READ ASTON VILLA VERDICT

The 33-year-old [has said](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/aston-villa-defender-elmohamady-eyes-retirement-in-england/1famq5razu0nn1jrhc7phbihps) that he wants to retire in England, but it doesn’t look like he will do so at Villa Park.

As for who would replace Elmohamady, Frederic Guilbert has [been on the periphery](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aston-villa/leistungsdaten/verein/405) and could be promoted to a backup role next season, so Dean Smith already has an internal solution.

***In other news, Ashley Preece expects an Aston Villa exit for [another defender](https://readastonvilla.com/2020/12/05/ashley-preece-expects-neil-taylor-to-leave-villa-in-2021/) who played big part in their 2019 promotion.***
