# Aston Villa eye January move for Matias Vecino

Aston Villa [aren’t short of midfielders](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aston-villa/kader/verein/405/saison_id/2020) with Douglas Luiz, John McGinn, Marvelous Nakamba, Conor Hourihane, Ross Barkley and Henri Lansbury. However, Barkley is only on loan, Lansbury is [surplus to requirements](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aston-villa/leistungsdaten/verein/405), Nakamba has [been on the periphery](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aston-villa/leistungsdaten/verein/405) and Hourihane [doesn’t command a regular starting place](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/conor-hourihane/leistungsdaten/spieler/61653) either.

Dean Smith could do with strengthening the midfield ahead of a potential exodus in January or next summer and [Calciomercato](https://www.calciomercato.com/news/inter-un-anno-fa-un-mercato-da-premier-un-errore-da-non-ripetere-36120) reported that Inter Milan’s [Matias Vecino](https://readwestham.com/2020/12/28/west-ham-make-offer-for-inter-milans-matias-vecino/) is on Villa’s radar. The 29-year-old underwent [surgery](https://sempreinter.com/2020/07/20/inter-confirm-matias-vecino-to-undergo-surgery-on-his-injured-knee-tomorrow/) on a serious knee injury in July and is still [recovering](https://sempreinter.com/2020/12/20/video-inter-midfielder-matias-vecino-continues-working-on-his-recovery/) in December, so he [hasn’t played a minute of competitive football](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matias-vecino/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/143812) this season.

Vecino, who is [regarded](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/6703772/chelsea-inter-milan-vecino-maurizio-sarri/) as a favourite of former Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri, was a regular last season when fit and made [25 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matias-vecino/leistungsdaten/spieler/143812/plus/0?saison=2019) in all competitions. In 20 Serie A games, the Uruguay international averaged one successful [tackle](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/135625/History/Mat%C3%ADas-Vecino) every 41.3 minutes, which [trumped](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/24/Archive/England-Aston-Villa) McGinn (43.7) and Luiz (56.7) in the Premier League.

### READ ASTON VILLA VERDICT

Whether Villa make a genuine move in January is unknown, however, as Vecino is [valued](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matias-vecino/marktwertverlauf/spieler/143812) at £14.4m and turns 30 next season.

There is little resale value if the midfielder is lured away from the San Siro, so Villa might be better off considering other options who could reap greater value further down the line.
