# Villa unlikely to sign ‘available’ Matias Vecino

Aston Villa have been [linked with a move](https://www.calciomercato.com/news/inter-un-anno-fa-un-mercato-da-premier-un-errore-da-non-ripetere-36120) for [Matias Vecino](https://readastonvilla.com/2020/12/29/aston-villa-eye-january-move-for-matias-vecino/), but it remains to be seen whether he’d make the switch from Inter Milan as he has been sidelined with a [knee injury](https://sempreinter.com/2020/12/20/video-inter-midfielder-matias-vecino-continues-working-on-his-recovery/) for most of the season.

The 29-year-old had [surgery](https://sempreinter.com/2020/07/20/inter-confirm-matias-vecino-to-undergo-surgery-on-his-injured-knee-tomorrow/) in July and was still [recovering](https://sempreinter.com/2020/12/20/video-inter-midfielder-matias-vecino-continues-working-on-his-recovery/) last month, so he has [yet to make an appearance](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matias-vecino/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/143812) in any competition this term.

Dean Smith [isn’t short on options](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aston-villa/startseite/verein/405) in the engine room, but Ross Barkley is currently out with a [hamstring injury](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8996039/Dean-Smith-reveals-Ross-Barkleys-hamstring-injury-not-bad-Aston-Villa-feared.html), Henri Lansbury was left out of the Premier League squad and is [surplus to requirements](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aston-villa/leistungsdaten/verein/405), Marvelous Nakamba has [struggled for playing time](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aston-villa/leistungsdaten/verein/405) and Conor Hourihane [isn’t commanding a starting place](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/conor-hourihane/leistungsdaten/spieler/61653), so a new addition may be required.

If Villa really are interested in signing Vecino, they have now been given a major boost by [Sport Mediaset](https://www.sportmediaset.mediaset.it/mercato/inter/inter-il-mercato-senza-colpi-due-le-uscite-con-eriksen-e-vecino_27207384-202102a.shtml)’s report. The Uruguay international is ‘available’ this month and may be granted a departure if his asking price is met, but his stock won’t be high given his lack of activity.

### READ ASTON VILLA VERDICT

Villa need a player who can make an instant impact for the second half of the season, so it may be a needless gamble bringing a midfielder who is considerably short of fitness. That [didn’t work with Danny Drinkwater](https://readastonvilla.com/2020/02/19/villa-fans-dont-want-drinkwater-to-start-against-southampton/) in January 2020 and it likely won’t work with Vecino either.

His [last appearance](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matias-vecino/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/143812/verein/46) for Inter came in July and he has only featured [twice for the Nerazzurri since March](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matias-vecino/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/143812/verein/46), so Smith may be better off turning his attentions elsewhere.
