Villa fans blast ‘awful’ John McGinn performance against Brighton

Aston Villa were very lucky to come away with a draw against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday and John McGinn was one of the players criticised for his performance.

The 26-year-old turned over the ball more than any other Villa player, but he frequently relinquished possession and struggled to make an impact on the ball in midfield.

Against Brighton, McGinn played for 90 minutes, had 69 touches, failed to win an aerial duel, completed 74% of his 50 passes, created one chance, won one tackle, whipped in one cross, made six interceptions, had two successful dribbles and made three clearances (WhoScored). However, he also lost possession 17 times, the most of any of his team-mates (Sofascore).

The Scottish international wasn’t Villa’s worst player on the day but fell below his usual standards and might benefit from a rest when the Claret and Blues host Leicester City in a week. Morgan Sanson was introduced from the bench against Brighton and might be in line for a start.

Marvelous Nakamba is also an option in midfield after he impressed in Villa’s win over Arsenal, but time will tell if Dean Smith makes a change. McGinn has made 21 Premier League appearances this season and hasn’t been substituted once. After racking up a lot of playing time, he might be in need of a break.

These Villa fans on Twitter certainly weren’t pleased with what they say from the 26-year-old last night, with some dubbing the Scot’s performance “awful”:
