# Why Aston Villa are unlikely to sign ‘influential’ Sander Berge \[Opinion\]

[Aston Villa](https://readastonvilla.com/2021/02/25/aston-villa-morning-news-round-up-25th-february-2021/) have been linked with a move for Sheffield United midfielder [Sander Berge](https://readastonvilla.com/2021/02/24/aston-villa-sander-berge-transfer-news-gossip-rumour/), and [Eurosport](https://www.eurosport.co.uk/football/transfers/2020-2021/erling-haaland-chelsea-growing-more-confident-of-winning-transfer-race-transfer-notebook_sto8145252/story.shtml) dubbed them ‘early favourites’ to procure his signature.

However, it remains to be seen if he’ll be on his way to the Midlands as Dean Smith is blessed with options in midfield already.

Blades manager Chris Wilder recently called Berge “an influential player’ on Norway’s *[TV2](https://www.tv2.no/sport/11954472/)* (via [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/sander-berge-sheffield-united-exit-wilder/)) and tipped the 23-year-old to play in the Champions League, but Villa only need another midfielder if they’re going to lose one who’s already at the club.

John McGinn and Douglas Luiz have been regulars under Smith ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aston-villa/leistungsdaten/verein/405)), Marvelous Nakamba has proven himself a [useful deputy](https://readastonvilla.com/2021/02/22/villa-fans-want-nakamba-start-v-leeds-douglas-luiz/), Morgan Sanson only joined in January and Jacob Ramsey is a [promising talent](https://readastonvilla.com/2021/02/24/aston-villa-fans-want-jacob-ramsey-starting-over-ross-barkley/) pushing for a start.

Although Berge is a talented ball-winning and box-to-box player (averaging [1.2 successful tackles](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/321020/Show/Sander-Berge) and completing [1.5 dribbles](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/321020/Show/Sander-Berge) per game), he operates in a position where Villa are already overstocked, so he ought not to be too high on the club’s summer shopping list.

McGinn and Luiz are key figures for Aston Villa, Nakamba is an important squad player, Sanson is a new acquisition and Ramsey recently [signed](https://readastonvilla.com/2021/02/17/hutton-delighted-villa-agreed-new-deal-jacob-ramsey/) a long-term deal as recognition for his development.

With all that in mind, Villa fans may have to curb their expectations on a potential deal for Berge.
