# Fans blast ‘terrible’ Elmohamady

[Aston Villa suffered a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United](https://www.avfc.co.uk/news/2021/march/Sheffield-United-1-0-Aston-Villa/) on Wednesday night and Ahmed Elmohamady was one of many players who underperformed. The 33-year-old was caught flat-footed for United’s goal and wasn’t very accurate with his long-range passing.

After [struggling in Villa’s 2-1 defeat to Leicester City](https://readastonvilla.com/2021/02/22/villa-fans-slam-ahmed-elmohamady-performance-leicester/), Elmo [performed much better in the 1-0 win over Leeds United](https://readastonvilla.com/2021/03/01/aston-villa-fans-react-ahmed-elmohamady-performance-leeds-united/) but let himself down in midweek. Fans were critical of his performance and blasted him on social media after the final whistle.

> Watkins could have had 2 assists in the 1st half.\

> 1\. Set up McGinn who should have scored.\
> 2\. He got clattered in the box & should have been a pen.\

> Poor defending by Elmohamady for the Sheff goal. Could easily have played the ball instead of letting it go to McGoldrick.[#FPL](https://twitter.com/hashtag/FPL?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)

> LOL – just seen a replay of the SHU goal: Elmohamady ignores McGoldrick's run behind him, THEN when the cross comes in, pulls his feet back to let the ball run across him for McGoldrick to score.\
> \
> Absolutely poor, do Villa have no other option at right-back?

Against the Blades, the Egyptian international played for 90 minutes, had 112 touches, won two aerial duels, completed 86.4% of his 81 passes, created two chances, had one shot, whipped in six crosses, made two tackles, blocked one shot, made one interception, won one freekick and made one clearance ([WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1485443/LiveStatistics/England-Premier-League-2020-2021-Sheffield-United-Aston-Villa)).

Elmohamady has made 12 appearances in all competitions this season, amassing 698 minutes of playing time. The 33-year-old has started three consecutive Premier League games ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ahmed-elmohamady/leistungsdaten/spieler/66333)) as Matty Cash is sidelined with injury and may keep his place against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday if the 23-year-old doesn’t return in time.

Elmohamady has put in more bad performances than good since Cash’s injury which may be a worry for Dean Smith. He was statuesque for United’s winning goal and needs to sharpen up as his errors are costing Villa points.
