# Fans on social media blast ‘poor’ John McGinn after Arsenal defeat

[Aston Villa suffered a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal](https://www.avfc.co.uk/news/2021/october/22/arsenal-3-1-aston-villa/) on Friday evening and John McGinn was one of many players criticised by supporters on [social media](https://twitter.com/search?q=mcginn%20poor&src=typed_query&f=live) for his performance. The 26-year-old, who was given a rating of 3/10 by [Birmingham Live](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/match-reports/aston-villa-player-ratings-arsenal-21948620), made two big mistakes that led to goals so fans weren’t happy.

> He was the only one who showed any fight tonight. \
> Mcginn was really poor and caused the 3rd goal so why not have a go at him?\
> Ings and Watkins did nothing. Targett was poor. So why blame mings?

> Mcginn's worst game of the season, Targett and Buendía not good enough, Watkins off the boil and three games in a row we have been extremely poor. [#avfc](https://twitter.com/hashtag/avfc?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)

> [#ARSAVL](https://twitter.com/hashtag/ARSAVL?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) this was a marker game for [#AstonVilla](https://twitter.com/hashtag/AstonVilla?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) and they've failed. Buendia, McGinn, Mings… All poor. Watkins and Ings barely a sniff at goal. Making arsenal look like a strong defensive team. Tough look. Back tot he drawing board

> Enjoying the Arsenal Aston Villa game really impressed with Smith Rowe. Was looking forward to watching Buendia tonight but he looks out of his depth & McGinn also poor for Aston Villa

[Against Arsenal](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1549619/Live/England-Premier-League-2021-2022-Arsenal-Aston-Villa), McGinn played for 90 minutes, had 52 touches, completed 74.3% of his 35 passes, had one shot which failed to hit the target, made one interception, failed to create a chance, gave away one foul, failed to make a tackle and had three successful dribbles.

The Scottish international has made [seven Premier League appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/john-mcginn/leistungsdaten/spieler/193116) this season, scoring two goals with one assist. McGinn has been a regular under Dean Smith and a great servant for Villa, but he’s now lost three league games on the bounce.

McGinn has racked up [119 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/john-mcginn/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/193116) in all competitions since his [2018-move](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/john-mcginn/transfers/spieler/193116) from Hibernian, scoring 15 goals with 20 assists. Questions are being asked whether he should be rest for Villa’s Premier League meeting with West Ham United on October 31. Smith won’t make any rash decisions, however.
