# Fans on social media blast ‘awful’ Matty Targett for ‘poor’ performance v West Ham

Aston Villa suffered a 4-1 defeat to West Ham United on Sunday afternoon and Matty Targett was one of many players who underperformed at Villa Park.

The 26-year-old endured a torrid time at left-back and was given a player rating of 3/10 by [Birmingham Live](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/match-reports/aston-villa-player-ratings-west-22024849), resulting in fierce criticism from supporters on social media.

Targett came up against Ben Johnson at right-back and Jarrod Bowen on the right wing, but Johnson and Bowen both got on the scoresheet. Bowen had [more shots](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1549629/LiveStatistics/England-Premier-League-2021-2022-Aston-Villa-West-Ham), chances created and successful dribbles than any West Ham player, so it wasn’t a good day for the Villa defender.

> Watching the Villa game always liked Matty Cash as a player, he is as good as Targett is bad

> The first half was poor with two preventable goals…I actually think that our best spell off the game was between 50 and 80 minutes..Young should have stayed on the bench we have Carney who would have done a good job… Targett has been poor again.. a series of mistakes from Hause

> Should have been Targett, he was so poor and Young could have gone left back.

> Don’t see how changing Manager will help long term.Mcginn, Targett, Mings have been awful last few weeks and were awful today, how does changing the coach help when key players cannot make a pass, win a tackle or keep the head?

> Agree.Targett is awful this season.Signing only Young is no real option. Also konsa and mings nowhere near as good. Even Martinez looks vulnerable.\
> We need a true leader. The marquee signings havent worked out.

In truth, Targett isn’t having the best season. The 26-year-old has made [10 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matt-targett/leistungsdaten/spieler/250478) in all competitions and has yet to score or register an assist. He’s been [dribbled past](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/136776/Show/Matt-Targett) 10 times in nine Premier League games, has given away nine fouls, is yet to make a successful dribble (0/3) and has completed just 71.2% of his passes.

Targett has now suffered four consecutive Premier League defeats with Villa and was arguably the worst performer on Sunday, so Dean Smith might have a decision to make ahead of Friday’s trip to Southampton.
