# Fans react on social media as Aston Villa are linked with Paulo Fonseca

Dean Smith has an [uncertain future at Aston Villa](https://theathletic.com/2928703/2021/11/03/aston-villa-four-defeats-on-the-bounce-dean-smith/) following a poor run of form. The Midlands outfit are coming off the back of four consecutive defeats in the Premier League and are closer to the relegation zone than midtable.

Although Smith is still popular with chief executive Christian Purslow and among most supporters, his job security will dwindle significantly should he fail to mastermind a win over Southampton on Friday.

*Craig Hope* of the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10154213/Aston-Villa-make-informal-contact-Paulo-Fonseca-pressure-mounting-Dean-Smith.html) says Villa have already lined up a potential replacement in Paulo Fonseca and held informal talks with his representatives. Fans’ reaction on [social media](https://twitter.com/search?q=fonseca%20villa&src=typed_query&f=live) has been mixed.

> Fonseca is a higher quality manager than Smith but the one thing Smith does have, is he is a Villa fan which should count for nought because this is a results business

> Just get Fonseca in now before Villa or someone snaps him up 🇵🇹👌….then spin it saying everything else was fake news and he was always the consortiums no.1 choice 🤦‍♂️😂

> Fonseca talked with Villa. 2 birds… Take him from a team we will likely be in a relegation fight with for points. This needs to end soon though. Can't imagine going into Saturday without someone in the stands when we were told that someone would be in the stands 2 weeks ago.

> Therefore, if we can make a significant improvement on the manager, which I believe Fonseca for example to be, I would be supportive of that.\

> If our aims are for the upper echelons of the Premier League and European Football we will need to be cutthroat, and will need quality.

Fonseca has [managed](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/paulo-fonseca/stationen/trainer/19944) Pinhalnovense (2009 – 2011), Desportivo Aves (2011 – 2012), Paços Ferreira (2012 – 2013) (2014 – 2015), FC Porto (2013 – 2014), SC Braga (2015 – 2016), Shakhtar Donetsk (2016 – 2019) and AS Roma (2019 – present).

At Roma, the 48-year-old has picked up 53 wins from [101 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/paulo-fonseca/leistungsdatenDetail/trainer/19944/verein_id/12/datum_zu/2019-07-01/datum_ab/2021-06-30) and drawn 20 times. He boasts a 52% win ratio in Serie A, so he would be an improvement on Smith. The question is whether Villa believe they’ve gone as far as they can go with the current manager.
