# Fans hail ‘brilliant’ news as Aston Villa close in on appointing Steven Gerrard

Aston Villa had Steven Gerrard at the top of their shortlist to replace Dean Smith when the 50-year-old was sacked and [Fabrizio Romano](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1458517242715545604) says they’re closing in on his appointment.

Gerrard recently led Rangers to their first Premiership title in a decade and currently has the Gers top of the table as he negotiates his exit, so fans on [social media](https://twitter.com/search?q=gerrard%20villa&src=typed_query&f=live) are excited to see him returning to the Premier League.

> Great appointment at Villa. He will do very well there. He conquered Scotland, now needs a step up. Keeping Villa up and solidifying them in the PL for a few years is a great choice for Gerrard, before moving onto a bigger club.

> Gerrard is a Legend that suffered a Lot during his playing career from heartbreaks. I wish him all the success at Aston Villa so that his image and legendary status is not soiled

> Think Gerrard to Villa is a great move for him if it goes through. Massive Club will have money money spend and will be a real test for him in the toughest league in the world.

> If the rumours of Steven Gerrard taking over Aston Villa are true, then I am chuffed for him. If he is going to be the next manager after Klopp, then having a few years experience in the Premier League is great.

> Will be great to see Steven Gerrard at Villa. A great club and exciting young manager. Lazy people will say it’s easy to do well in Scotland, but winning the League with Rangers and having a good Europa League run was a great achievement.

> This is brilliant stuff from Villa tbh. Gerrard slowly building his resume and getting closer to his dream of coaching Liverpool, and Villa signing an exciting upcoming manager to work with the talented players they signed last summer. [https://t.co/mg7qpN5tca](https://t.co/mg7qpN5tca)

> Brilliant next steps for Villa and Gerrard both, the latter of whom surely has his eyes set on the Liverpool job in the coming years. [https://t.co/mjGrD2zpWW](https://t.co/mjGrD2zpWW)

The 41-year-old [took charge](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/steven-gerrard/stationen/trainer/51276) of Rangers in 2018 and has presided over [192 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/steven-gerrard/leistungsdatenDetail/trainer/51276/verein_id/124/datum_zu/2018-06-01/datum_ab/2021-11-11). He led Rangers to second place in his first and second [seasons](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/steven-gerrard/leistungsdatenLigenNational/trainer/51276) at Ibrox before winning the title at a canter in his third campaign – 89 points from 33 games.

Rangers are top of the Premiership with 27 points from 12 games and look good to defend their league crown, but Gerrard clearly feels he can’t pass up the opportunity to manage back in England. He’d [like](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/steven-gerrard-liverpool-aston-villa-25426444) to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool in the future, so his stint at Villa will be somewhat of an audition.

Fans seem optimistic that Gerrard’s appointment could breed success in the Midlands after his impressive work in Scotland.
