# Fans on social media praise ‘outstanding’ Matt Targett for ‘class’ performance

Aston Villa have made it two wins out of two under Steven Gerrard after [beating Crystal Palace 2-1 on Saturday afternoon](https://www.avfc.co.uk/news/2021/november/27/Crystal-Palace-1-2-Aston-Villa/) and Matt Targett was one of many players to shine at Selhurst Park. The 26-year-old was short of form earlier in the season but has turned things around since Gerrard was appointed manager.

Targett was given a player rating of 8/10 by [Birmingham Live](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/match-reports/aston-villa-player-ratings-palace-22297022) for his performance and many fans on [social media](https://twitter.com/search?q=matt%20targett&src=typed_query) hailed his contribution in South London. The former Southampton left-back silenced Michael Olise so much that he was hooked in the second half and he got on the scoresheet for the first time in nearly two years – his [last goal](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matt-targett/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/250478/plus/0?saison=2019&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) came in the EFL Cup (January 2020).

> Some of the one touch football is really good .. attacking football us good and matt targett has played well in this and brighton game .. things are looking up 🥰

> Another brilliant performance from a side now looking totally transformed by the coaching of Stevie G. All praise to NSWE & Christian Purslow for instigating necessary change, & to Nakamba, McGinn, Mings, Targett & Ollie – who were all outstanding today! > I like Targett, taken a lot of criticism recently but has shown the correct attitude by working hard and showing his class. As fans we often have short memories and forget his contribution last season. Hoping it's onwards and upwards for him now 💪🏻

> Fantastic performance and result, shame about the goal at the end. Bailey was OK but hes trying to do too much when theres an easier option. Ollie wasn't at the races but Marv, Mings, Young, JJ & McGinn were fantastic. Nice boost for Targett. Now onto Man City [#AVFC](https://twitter.com/hashtag/AVFC?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) [#CRYAVL](https://twitter.com/hashtag/CRYAVL?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) [#UTV](https://twitter.com/hashtag/UTV?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)

[Against Palace](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1549664/LiveStatistics/England-Premier-League-2021-2022-Crystal-Palace-Aston-Villa), Targett played for 90 minutes, had 63 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 84.4% of his 45 passes, made two tackles, blocked one shot, made two clearances and had one shot which he scored from – firing home a [low effort from close range](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Nf4AIAxk3k&ab_channel=SkySportsFootball) after a corner wasn’t properly dealt with.

The 26-year-old has made [13 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matt-targett/leistungsdaten/spieler/250478) in all competitions this season, scoring one goal with one assist. He looks rejuvenated under Gerrard and fans hope that will continue.
