# Fans on social media say ‘yes’ to Aston Villa signing ‘great’ Lucas Digne

Aston Villa have Matty Targett and Ashley Young who can operate at left-back, but Targett’s [poor form](https://www.footballfancast.com/aston-villa-news/aston-villa-matt-targett-steven-gerrard-man-city-premier-league-villa-park-match-reaction-analysis) and Young’s advancing age has Steven Gerrard looking for an upgrade in the position.

The [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10383395/Aston-Villa-considering-bid-Everton-left-Lucas-Digne.html) say one player on Villa’s radar is Lucas Digne, who is expected to leave Everton in January after [falling out](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/jan/07/digne-accused-by-benitez-of-putting-own-interests-above-evertons) with manager Rafael Benitez. Fans on [social media](https://twitter.com/search?q=digne%20%23avfc&src=recent_search_click&f=live) had some strong opinions on the rumour.

> So if its true we're in for a LB [#Digne](https://twitter.com/hashtag/Digne?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) a proven, but off form, PL performer with great delivery into attacking areas, [#Hickey](https://twitter.com/hashtag/Hickey?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) looks a top prospect but is unproven in the PL yet Gerrard should know enough of him from his Rangers days to know if he can cut it 🤔🦁✍🏼 [#AVFC](https://twitter.com/hashtag/AVFC?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) [#UTV](https://twitter.com/hashtag/UTV?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)

Digne [joined](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/lucas-digne/transfers/spieler/126664) the Toffees from Barcelona in 2018 and has gone on to make [127 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/lucas-digne/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/126664) in all competitions, scoring six goals with 20 assists. The 28-year-old has drawn the ire of Benitez, however, so his days at Goodison Park appear to be numbered.

Villa aren’t the only side interested in Digne, however, with the *Daily Mail* revealing West Ham, Newcastle United and Chelsea also want the French international, but his £30m asking price and £128k-per-week wages could prove a stumbling block.

Whether Villa would put down so much money on a fullback in January remains to be seen, but they do value Digne’s experience. Gerrard wants more tried and tested talent alongside his young defenders, but it’s a big commitment paying £6.6m-a-year in wages on top of £30m up front.
