# Aston Villa vs Fulham goes beyond the pitch as both clubs battle for a Spanish defender this summer

**Saturday’s clash between Fulham and Aston Villa carries a subplot that extends well beyond three Premier League points.**

- Villa travel to Craven Cottage for a 12:30 kick-off on Saturday
- Both clubs are pursuing Celta Vigo’s Oscar Mingueza as a free agent this summer
- Arsenal and Juventus have also entered the race for the 26-year-old Spaniard
- Mingueza’s contract expires in June and he is unlikely to sign an extension

## Saturday’s fixture: three points with extra meaning

Craven Cottage hosts what promises to be a fascinating Premier League encounter on Saturday lunchtime. [Emery’s side travel to West London in excellent form](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/04/19/emery-aston-villa-sunderland-4-3-match-report-reaction-2026/): five points clear at the top of the Champions League qualification race with five games remaining.

However, a trip to face Marco Silva’s Fulham is never straightforward. The Cottagers have been one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers this season, and they will be determined to disrupt Villa’s momentum at a critical stage of the campaign.

The wider context adds further intrigue. Both clubs are simultaneously pursuing the same [summer transfer target](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/04/08/aston-villa-transfer-news-oscar-mingueza-celta-vigo-free-agent/) creating a rivalry that extends well beyond the ninety minutes on Saturday afternoon.

## Oscar Mingueza: the free agent both clubs want

Celta Vigo’s Oscar Mingueza will be available on a free transfer this summer and Villa, Fulham, and Arsenal are all in active pursuit of his signature, according to Estadio Deportivo.

The 26-year-old former Barcelona man has no intention of signing an extension at Celta Vigo, despite the La Liga club’s repeated efforts to retain him.

His new representatives at British agency Unique Sports Group have had no contact with the Spanish club, a telling signal about the direction of travel.

Celta Vigo manager Claudio Giráldez was honest about the situation when speaking to [Sport](https://www.sport.es/es/noticias/barca/giraldez-barca-llevaria-celta-lamine-pedri-raphinha-129330162)earlier this week. “*He’s a fantastic player. I hope he can stay, we know it will be difficult to keep him*,” the manager admitted.

That candid acknowledgement from within the club effectively confirms what the transfer market already suspects: Mingueza is leaving.

## Why Villa have the edge

Villa’s interest in Mingueza is the most longstanding of the three Premier League clubs.

The right-back was previously monitored when Monchi was at Villa Park, meaning the club’s knowledge of his profile is deep and well-established.

Furthermore, Champions League football next season represents a compelling sporting argument that neither Fulham nor Arsenal can currently match with equivalent certainty.

The 26-year-old’s profile suits Emery’s system precisely. His 27 La Liga appearances this season reflect a technically accomplished, positionally intelligent full-back capable of competing at the highest level.

At zero transfer cost, he represents outstanding financial value.

Saturday’s Premier League points matter enormously. But the Mingueza subplot ensures both clubs will be keeping a very close eye on each other long after the final whistle at Craven Cottage.
