Aston Villa transfer target offered new contract by Fulham
  • Fulham have offered Harry Wilson a new contract amid interest from other clubs
  • Insiders understand that Wilson expects a move elsewhere to test himself at a higher level
  • Aston Villa remain interested, but have not made any contract offer

Fulham has officially announced that Harry Wilson has been offered a new contract. This comes after intense interest from numerous clubs, including Aston Villa, in an attempt to fend them off. However, reports have stated that Wilson will leave Craven Cottage at the expiration of his contract on June 30th.

For months, the narrative surrounding the 29-year-old Welsh international has pointed toward an inevitable summer exit.

Over the last few months, updates have indicated that initial exploratory talks had opened between Wilson’s representatives and several top-flight clubs, with further media speculation heavily framing the playmaker’s arrival at Villa as an impending certainty.

Conversely, neither side has agreed on anything. As part of their official player contract updates and retained list, Fulham confirmed a massive post-season clear-out. The Cottagers will release 14 players on free transfers when their contracts expire on 30 June.

Included in that announcement were contract offers, which Harry Wilson’s name was among. Improved terms have been laid on the table for Wilson, but it is understood he will not accept.

Villa shortlist and the tactical mismatch

While clubs like Leeds and Everton have reportedly actively engaged with the player’s representatives, it is Villa who has held the longest-standing association with the player. Intermediaries and representatives have proactively offered Wilson to Villa’s decision-makers multiple times over the last few months.

Yet, despite Villa heavily discussing Wilson internally, the club has not yet materialised a formal contract offer. As previously reported, senior sources at the club have firmly dismissed the notion that a deal is imminent, pointing to a distinct tactical conundrum.

Unai Emery has explicitly placed a premium on acquiring an explosive, raw-paced wide player this summer who can hug the touchline and stretch deep-lying defensive units.

Wilson, who registered ten goals and seven assists in 36 Premier League matches last term, does not naturally fit this physical profile. Instead, he excels at cutting inside from the right onto his lethal left foot or operating centrally as a technical No 10.

Villa remain favourites

Despite this profile mismatch delaying Emery’s final green light, the consensus is clear. If Villa choose to table a formal contract offer, they would instantly become the most likely destination for the winger.

The allure of what the Villans can currently offer simply trumps the financial and sporting packages available at Fulham, Leeds or Everton.

Champions League football, an opportunity to work under a world-class manager, and a high salary are things that would attract Wilson to Villa Park. Clearly, they hold power.

Wilson has reached a pivotal juncture in his career. At 29, he is eager to test himself at the top of European football and the Premier League. Fulham’s announcement proves they will do everything within their power to lock down their talisman, but the pen will remain far from the paper while Wilson waits to see if Villa turn their long-term admiration into a concrete proposal.

He would certainly be a healthy addition to the Villa squad, offering more quality in squad depth than what they currently have. However, his tactical profile is not a priority, and it remains to be seen whether Villa change their tact.
