# Emiliano Martinez Helps Argentina Reach World Cup Quarter Finals

**Emiliano Martinez and Argentina are through to the World Cup quarter-finals after a dramatic 3-2 win over Egypt in Atlanta.**

The Aston Villa goalkeeper started for Lionel Scaloni’s side as the holders survived a major scare in the last 16.

Egypt led 2-0 through goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko. Argentina looked close to a damaging exit before their late comeback.

Cristian Romero pulled one back with 11 minutes left. Lionel Messi then levelled before Enzo Fernandez scored the stoppage-time winner.

[The Guardian’s live coverage](https://www.theguardian.com/football/live/2026/jul/07/argentina-v-egypt-world-cup-2026-last-16-live) detailed Argentina’s late turnaround, which sends them into a quarter-final against Switzerland or Colombia.

## Villa Keep Watching Martinez Workload

For Villa, Martinez’s progress brings mixed value. The club will welcome another major international achievement for their first-choice goalkeeper.

It also extends his summer workload before Unai Emery’s squad fully regroups.

[ReadAstonVilla has already looked at](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/07/04/martinez-argentina-world-cup-aston-villa-workload/) Martinez’s World Cup minutes and what they could mean for Villa’s pre-season planning. Argentina’s latest win keeps that issue alive.

Martinez remains central for club and country. He continues to give Argentina experience, authority and a big-game presence in goal.

Villa will now hope Martinez comes through the quarter-final cleanly, with the new Premier League season moving closer.
