# Aston Villa midfielder in talks to join Notts County on loan

**Tommi O’Reilly to Notts County is now under discussion after Sheffield Wednesday decided against completing a move for the Aston Villa midfielder.**

The 22-year-old could join the newly promoted League One side on a season-long loan.

[Jacob Tanswell reports](https://x.com/J_Tanswell/status/2082012957685252502) that O’Reilly is in talks over a temporary switch to Meadow Lane. A move to Sheffield Wednesday came close last week, but the parties decided not to proceed following discussions.

Portsmouth, Oxford United and Huddersfield Town have also monitored the attacking midfielder. However, Notts County have now moved into a strong position to secure his signature.

O’Reilly remains under contract with Villa until summer 2028. Unai Emery’s side appear ready to approve another loan after his productive campaign with Crewe Alexandra.

## Tommi O’Reilly to Notts County follows Crewe success

O’Reilly recorded seven goals and 12 league assists during the 2025/26 campaign. No League Two player registered more assists, while he contributed 21 goals and assists across all competitions.

The Villa academy graduate can operate as a number 10 or move inside from the right. His vision and ability in tight spaces helped him become one of League Two’s most productive creators.

A step into League One provides the natural progression after previous loans with Real Unión, Shrewsbury Town and MK Dons. O’Reilly struggled for consistent minutes during some of those spells before establishing himself at Crewe.

Notts County could offer a significant role as they prepare for their first third-tier campaign since 2014/15. The move would also follow the path taken by Jack Grealish, who developed during a successful loan at Meadow Lane before breaking into Villa’s first team.
