# PSG drop major Aston Villa fitness clue as Luis Enrique faces Super Cup race against time

**Aston Villa have been handed a major clue ahead of Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup after several Paris Saint-Germain stars were limited to brief appearances in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United.**

Marquinhos, Vitinha, João Neves, and Nuno Mendes were all restricted to half-hour cameos in Gothenburg, leaving Luis Enrique facing a race against time to build match sharpness just four days before facing Unai Emery’s side in Salzburg on 12 August.

## **PSG stars short on minutes ahead of Salzburg**

PSG named a youthful starting lineup against United, though Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Willian Pacho featured from the off. Ibrahim Mbaye gave the French champions the lead after just two minutes before Bryan Mbeumo equalised for United, a result confirmed by PSG’s official match centre and [Manchester United’s match report](https://www.manutd.com/en/news/report-manchester-united-1-psg-1-aug-2026).

The most significant development for Emery, however, came midway through the second half. Marquinhos, Vitinha, Neves, and Mendes were introduced together around the hour mark as Enrique continues to reintegrate core players following their World Cup campaign.

That limited preparation was always on the cards. *[L’Équipe](https://www.lequipe.fr/)* previously reported that PSG’s World Cup players would receive between three and four weeks of holiday, depending on how far their national teams progressed. That schedule has left Enrique with virtually no time to get his strongest starting XI fully up to speed.

[ReadAstonVilla highlighted after the defeat to Bayern Munich](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/08/07/bayern-defeat-gives-aston-villa-clear-warning-before-psg-super-cup/) that Villa must improve ahead of the Super Cup, but the French champions are clearly facing severe preparation issues of their own.

## **Ibrahim Mbaye provides Aston Villa warning**

While PSG’s core starters lack minutes, Mbaye’s early goal gave Villa plenty to think about. The teenager needed only two minutes to score against United and continues to push for regular opportunities in Paris.

Villa supporters will already recognise his name. [ReadAstonVilla previously reported Villa’s interest in Mbaye](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/07/08/mbaye-exit-signal-aston-villa-transfer-opening/) after the winger was linked with a move away from Paris earlier this summer.

Whether he starts in Salzburg remains uncertain as established stars return, but Saturday proved Enrique still possesses dangerous, sharp young options if he needs to offset his starters’ fatigue.

With no further friendlies scheduled on [PSG’s official schedule](https://www.psg.fr/en), Emery now has four days to plot how Villa can exploit PSG’s lack of match fitness when the two European champions meet.
