# Aston Villa handed major John McGinn boost after knee scan results

**Aston Villa captain John McGinn is expected to be fit for the start of the Premier League season after receiving encouraging news over his knee injury.**

McGinn was forced off during Villa’s 3-1 pre-season victory over BG Pathum United after landing awkwardly on his left knee.

Initial assessments suggested the problem was not serious, but Villa were waiting for the results of an MRI scan before establishing a clearer recovery timeframe.

[Jacob Tanswell of The Athletic now reports](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7496247/2026/08/06/john-mcginn-aston-villa-injury-update/) that those results have provided further optimism, with McGinn expected to be available for the Premier League opener away to Brighton on 23 August.

## John McGinn injury update hands Villa welcome boost

The midfielder attempted to continue after suffering the problem in Thailand, but Unai Emery immediately decided against taking any unnecessary risk.

Villa have monitored him closely since then.

McGinn offered an encouraging indication of his recovery over the weekend when he posted: “See you Wednesday in Salzburg.”

It is still unclear whether McGinn will be available for Wednesday’s final, but the longer-term picture is considerably more positive.

His expected availability for Brighton removes one potential problem for Emery following a summer in which Villa’s midfield has undergone significant change.

Youri Tielemans has left the club, while Amadou Onana and Johan Manzambi have both been dealing with knee injuries.

McGinn’s experience and versatility therefore remain important as Villa prepare to balance another Premier League campaign with Champions League football.

The immediate decision will be whether Wednesday comes too soon.

Whatever happens against PSG, the scan results suggest Villa should have their captain available when their league campaign begins.
