# John McGinn sends defiant Aston Villa message after summer exodus

**John McGinn Aston Villa comments ahead of the UEFA Super Cup have delivered a defiant response to concerns over the club’s summer upheaval.**

Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne have all left Villa Park, but the captain insists the core of Unai Emery’s side remains intact and hungry for more success.

Villa head into Wednesday’s meeting with Paris Saint-Germain after one of the most significant summers of change since Emery arrived.

Rogers has joined Chelsea, Tielemans moved to Manchester United and Digne completed a return to PSG earlier this week. Emery has also had to integrate several new arrivals while dealing with World Cup-related absences.

McGinn, however, does not believe those departures should change expectations.

[Speaking ahead of the Super Cup, the Villa captain stressed that the club still has the same core, manager, methods and ambition](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/john-mcginn-unai-emery-relish-34442070). He also pointed out that significant change is hardly unusual at Villa or elsewhere in the Premier League.

## John McGinn Aston Villa message answers summer doubts

McGinn has experienced almost every stage of Villa’s transformation since arriving from Hibernian in 2018.

The Scotland international believes the standards established under Emery can help new players settle quickly, with Villa’s existing leadership group responsible for maintaining the culture that has driven their recent progress.

That message is particularly relevant after [The Guardian’s writers backed Villa to fall to seventh this season](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/08/10/guardian-writers-make-brutal-aston-villa-prediction-after-summer-upheaval/?utm_source=chatgpt.com), citing the scale of the summer rebuild as one of the main concerns.

McGinn clearly sees it differently.

Villa finished fourth and won the Europa League last season, while Emery has repeatedly insisted the club intends to keep progressing rather than treating that success as the end point. [Reuters reported from Salzburg that Emery wants Villa to continue raising their standards](https://www.reuters.com/sports/soccer/villas-emery-eyes-super-cup-success-against-psg-despite-depleted-squad-2026-08-11/?utm_source=chatgpt.com), despite admitting the squad has undergone considerable change.

Wednesday provides an immediate opportunity to prove McGinn right.

Villa may look different, but their captain’s message is clear: **the ambition under Emery has not changed.**
